Marjorie's Dead

DARK FOREST THEATRE PRESENTS

A tale of a woman buried alive.

“It’s not all a dream, you know. Life can be — but not always. Sometimes we must look through the veil and see things as they truly are. There is wonder in stories… as long as you don’t get lost in them.”

Journey back with us to 18th-century Ireland — a land where ancient myth meets a shifting world, and the line between life and death is thinner than it seems. In 1705, Marjorie McCall was buried in Shankill Graveyard, Lurgan. The beloved wife of Dr. John McCall, her sudden illness and untimely death left her husband grieving, helpless despite his medical knowledge. She was mourned, waked, and laid to rest — buried wearing a beautiful, valuable wedding ring.

But not everyone grieved.

That same night, as the town slept, two grave robbers crept into the cemetery. The ring — and her body — were worth a fortune. They dug her up, pried open the coffin, and began to cut the ring from her swollen finger.

They really should have checked if she was dead.

Dark Forest Theatre, in partnership with Lurgan Townscape Heritage, is proud to bring this true story to life.

''Marjorie's Dead' was creative and unafraid to break conventions. It worked smart. The set design, the costumes. The whole play truly showed what theatre makers can do. It’s about taking risks, telling stories that need to be told, and indeed creating something brilliant. This production reminded me what theatre is all about. Theatre isn’t set in stone, theatre is like Marjorie’s fate, it’s all about taking hold of your own narrative.'
